Seven Steps to a Safer School
In this section, we have endeavored to provide a procedural process to support any school's effort to provide a safe and effective learning environment. The "Seven Steps" articulated here have been drawn from the school violence literature and from the practical experiences of seasoned educators. We have addressed the following eleven essential questions about the process of implementing an effective, comprehensive school safety plan.

• How do I put together an effective team to oversee and manage this effort?
• How do I conduct an inexpensive yet helpful needs assessment of my school?
• How do I go about analyzing the assessment data into a useful form to guide planning?
• How do I determine which programs or procedures to use in my school?
• How do I ensure that the prevention programs are implemented so that they do the most good for the time and money spent on them?
• Is there a practical and simple way that I can evaluate the success of the program and have some accountability data?
• How do I make certain that the effort doesn't fizzle out after a year of hard work?
Contained in each of the STEPS are helpful “Quick Look” summaries of the important points, links to useful forms and templates to guide the process, and links to other pertinent sections of this web site.
